Ruth Anne Evans, a native of Schenectady, New York, began working in the Union College Library in the summer of 1944, while she was an undergraduate at Smith College. Upon graduating, she began working in the library full-time before attending Columbia University in 1947. In 1973, she was the first women at Union to be given the rank of full professor. Evans formally retired in 1989 but she continued to work on several Union related projects including the Union College Encyclopedia of Union College History and the transcription of the diary written by Jonathan Pearson, the long-time Union treasurer in the 19th century. She was considered the unofficial historian of Union College. Evans died in 2001.
