Biographical / Historical
Ruth Anne Evans, a native of Schenectady, New York, began working in the Union College Library in the summer of 1944, while she was an undergraduate at Smith College. Upon graduating, she began working in the library full-time before attending Columbia University in 1947. A year later, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia’s School of Library Science. After briefly working at Colgate, Evans returned to Union College in 1952 as an assistant cataloger. During her tenure, she held a variety of positions including cataloguer, reference librarian, acquisitions librarian, circulation librarian, Head of collection development and acting library director. In 1973, she was the first women at Union to be given the rank of full professor. Evans formally retired in 1989 but she continued to work on several Union related projects including the Union College Encyclopedia of Union College History and the transcription of the diary written by Jonathan Pearson, the long-time Union treasurer in the 19th century. She was considered the unofficial historian of Union College. Evans died in 2001.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The bulk of the collection was donated by Ruth Anne Evans in 2000. One folder of materials was purchased from Robert Laper (via Ebay), July 2006. Other files were probably transferred from elsewhere in the Library at an unknown date.
Processing Information
In 2011, collection 693 was split into two separate collections designated 2007.023 and 2007.024. In 2018, the collection was reunified as SCA-0693.
