Scope and Contents

Documents related to the founding and administration of the Union College. Materials related to the various property purchases in New York, the construction of College buildings, College trustee meetings and decisions, legal information related to several lawsuits over College lotteries in the 1840s, financial records, student organizations, curriculum and faculty committees. The bulk of the materials date from the 19th century.

The materials are arranged by administrative departments of the College, and for the most part are in chronological order, within a given Subseries and series.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Miscellanoues documents on Union College history asembled as an artifical collection for reasons of access by Schaffer Library, Special Collections and Archives during the early 1970s. The materials come from a variety of College departments, local historical societies and individual donors. Before being transferred to the Schaffer Library Special Collections and Archives department by the presidents, treasurers and trustees of the College, notably President Eliphalet Nott (who served 1804-1866), Treasurers Henry Yates (who served 1806-1833) and Jonathan Pearson (who served as Librarian from 1839-1886 and as Treasurer from 1854-1883), and Trustee/Treasurer Frank Bailey (from 1902 Treasurer and from 1910 Trustee to his death in 1953).
